Garage Bar “Garage Bar”

14"x21" en plein air. This painting on Arches 140lb paper was poured and completed in two days. First, I did my small value sketch & noted the colors. After drawing on the 14"x21" paper, I masked all the white areas. . A container of liquid transparent watercolors was mixed for each color and with each pour the values went darker. I started with the lightest value, poured that, waited for it to dry and then poured the next colors. I had two good days and because of the value sketch I was consistent with the shadows and light as seen the first day the sketch was drawn. When I removed the masking I evaluated the white areas and used a brush to soften the areas. This could not have been done without the value sketch and viewing the location en plein air. I was excited to see this process worked outdoors.
