George Smith

George Smith

Location:

George Smith was born in Liverpool, England, and has been producing art all his life. He studied painting and sculpture at Liverpool University (BFA) under personal tutelage of David Nash and apprenticed with sculptor Sean Rice. George exhibited his work, in both painting and sculpture, in Liverpool, Wales, and as part of an art collective in Norwich, before immigrating to Canada in 2000.
Once, many years ago, I made my first piece of art. I was only five or six and didn’t actually know what art was. I had just twisted and pulled apart a lump of Plasticine. I looked at one piece in one hand, then at the other piece in my other hand; and I made a decision. I chose one of them as being visually more interesting than the other. I had, unknowingly, discovered aesthetics. Now, every time I look at my work, I hope the image I have created makes me feel like that small boy who has discovered something wonderful.
