FREDERICK FULMER, PAINTER
VENICE/JOSHUA TREE

My work has always involved the use of color & texture in abstract forms. A memorable encounter with Noah Purifoy & his Outdoor Museum inspired me to incorporate found objects from the desert landscape. My work took on a new look, using assemblage techniques and materials. My most recent pieces use photo image transfers of plants and landscape with abstract elements inspired by the Mojave Desert.

In addition to exhibiting around the world, I am proud to be a participating artist in the Venice Family Clinic Art Walk Open Studio for the last 10 years. This is a yearly fundraiser where proceeds from art sales go to healthcare for those most in need in our community.

I am also a participating artist in the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council Open Studio Tours.

BACKGROUND

I Graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in painting and printmaking and soon after moved to New York, where I worked at Fischbach Gallery and as a studio assistant for Jasper Johns.

JOSHUA TREE ART GALLERY

Exchanging ideas with and supporting other artists has always been a passion of mine. In order to help showcase local artists, I founded the Joshua Tree Art gallery (JTAG) in 2009. I curated shows for ten years, including a Plein Air exhibition in partnership with the Mojave Desert Land Trust. Sales of artwork benefited the preservation of desert wilderness for our community.

In 2019 co-curated with Barbara Spiller the ”Mojave Made” exhibition of JTAG artists at Santa Monica Arts Studio at Barker Hangar, Santa Monica , Ca.

JOSHUA TREE HIGHLANDS ARTIST RESIDENCY

In 2007, I co-founded the Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency with my partner James Berg (JTHAR.COM). Now in it’s fourteenth year, the residency program provides living and studio space and gallery exhibition for artists from all over the world.

In 2017, I co curated a show with Alma Ruiz of printed works & sculpture by Ed Ruscha. The show was a fundraiser for the Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Scholarship fund.

ASHER GREY GALLERY

I am the founder and administrator of the Asher Grey Gallery on ARTSY.NET

It is my pleasure to be working with the Palm Springs Arts Council again as I served as a Board Member for the Council in 2014 & 2015.
