Kikelomo Solomon-Ayeni
This is my first solo virtual exhibition and I will be showing the world some photo art of me carrying my son on my back, titled 'Backing the Baby'. The full collection will be exhibited in other galleries before 2024 is over. The project highlights the art of strapping a baby on the back, a style that is common to African women who want to be free to go about their day and still want their baby close by for protection and bond.
Included also is 'Olawole', my 15months old son, nicknamed "Ọmọ-Ọlá" (the child of wealth). I watch him go to the glass door everyday to look at the surroundings and to look for an opportunity to escape the house. Anytime he is convinced that he has no reason to be indoors, he stands by the glass door, crying to be let out.
In this Solo Expression, my son is featured in every image. Having told stories of children and women over the years, I am excited to be featuring my own child in my art.
I hope you enjoy watching.
