Life Shield Series by Doreen Valenza

My visual vocabulary of reinvented symbols is my own unique visual language. The language of these symbols, some not being truly identifiable but many are universal.
They are found throughout indigenous peoples and open up interpretation by the viewer.
The stylistic progression of my ©2014 Life Shield Series, evolved in a chronological progression. In the ©2014 Life Shield Series, elements of balance and composition were solved by the addition of snakes to the interior and surrounding spaces.
In this new collection, snakes are abstracted shapes, adding a dynamic "interaction of positive and negative forms surrounding space" - the central features of a style of painting known as "Indian Space Painting”.

This collection of flat, seamless, small scale space paintings contain pictographic forms. The transformation or morphing of the forms can be identified by the use of eccentric organic shapes and juxtaposed rhythmic geometry of deliberately off kilter elements within the composition.
