James Harkins

I was born in Oakland, CA, in 1947, and lived in the Bay Area until moving to Portland 5 years ago. I am a self taught artist. My first paintings were done 40 some years ago. I've had abstract as well as realistic style, but never felt I had a style that had continuing possibilities for development until 20 years ago.

My paintings are transparent and opague watercolors on paper, approximately 8" x 11".

I consider myself an expressionist, using nature as my primary inspiration and a metaphor for emotion. Every painting is an experiment. With my approach to watercolor comes the impossibility of knowing how blended color layers will dry. But I change the painting, including rinsing the paper and doing something with the remaining image, to achieve the completed image.
