Sarah Capps

Sarah is an artist with an extraordinary story. She has synesthesia – a rare condition that affects how one processes sensations. In Sarah’s case, when she hears sound, she simultaneously sees color, shape, and form. As you’d expect, much of her painting is done with the speaker turned up. Painting Music

These are a collection of musical paintings created as abstract variations of my visual experience of music. Some paintings focus solely on my experience of one instrument or a singer's voice, and others are compilations of multiple sounds or instruments overlapping one another.

Gloria “Gloria”

This piece was created in 2019 as a representation of my visual experience of the piano in the song "Gloria" by The Lumineers. The entire painting is 30x40".

When You Say Nothing At All “When You Say Nothing At All”

This is a section of a larger anniversary commission completed in 2019. The image represents my visual experience of the opening instrumental to "When You Say Nothing At All" by Alison Krauss.

Can't Take My Eyes Off of You “Can't Take My Eyes Off of You”

Commissioned and painted in early 2019, this anniversary piece is representative of my visual experience of instruments and voice overlapping in the song, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" by Lauren Hill.

Custom Song “Custom Song”

This piece represents my visual experience of the guitar within a custom song written for a couple by Mike Sweet. The music and painting were commissioned and completed in 2018.

Landscapes

In addition to music, much of my work is inspired by the local Landscape near Charlottesville, Virginia. I often merge my visual experience of music into landscapes by taking inspiration from the colors, shapes and forms I see while listening to the song.

Pink Sunset in Cville “Pink Sunset in Cville”

Pink Mountains “Pink Mountains”

Completed and sold in 2019. Featured in several issues of Tatler and House and Garden magazines.
