Lauren Consolo Smith

I am a water-based painter originally from Cleveland Ohio. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Bowling Green State University (2008) with a specialization in painting and a focus in art education. Since 2009, I have been an art educator for Eastwood Local Schools in Pemberville, Ohio. Creating artwork has always been my passion. It was while preparing for my BFA exhibit at BGSU that I began to develop my abstract, patterned style, which has continued to grow and develop since 2007. My artwork is autobiographically motivated, usually pertaining to dreams and my fascination with memory. Lately, my work has become more abstract. I layer series of patterns and washes to create landscapes of color, texture, and pattern. I use mostly acrylic paints with colors at their highest intensity contrasted against dark shades and muted, milky colors. These painted alternate realities reference nature and real life spaces but remain exaggerated and fantasized. I work with water-based paints and often use collaged elements to create texture and a stronger sense of depth. It is my wish that the viewer will become connected with these abstract spaces and become able to relate them to their own imagination and memories.
