Canadian sculptor Tom Ashbourne creates intriguing contemporary abstract sculptures
in stone, mixed media, and metal. His signature style is sensuous curves,
touchable textures, and compelling tension between positive and negative space.
Tom effortlessly finds balance between
contemporary and classic art. Tom’s natural gift of thinking in 3D flow together
with his passion for texture and form, transforming raw stone into elegant art.
Each sculpture is a three-dimensional extension of my artistic experiences as a life-long collector and patron. I primarily work in stone, interacting with its natural energy and revealing its essence and vision of its true self.

Catching Fire’s story starts with nature growing strong and beautiful, represented by the unadorned side of the sculpture. As you turn the sculpture, the story evolves as a fire burns straight and tall, well under control. As the fire’s energy builds, it bursts into a magnificent but powerful wildfire, reaching for the dark night sky.
Throughout history a “Candle in the Window” has symbolized hope, safety, and hospitality.
My father's family is from Twillingate, Newfoundland (Canada). A candle in the window is a familiar beacon on dark nights, guiding loved ones home after weeks of backbreaking work on the wild Atlantic Ocean. The fissured translucent calcite communicates the fragility of life; the burl base is the transformative nature of family; and the warm copper flame is for love and hope.
Becoming One is a sentimental sculpture. It evokes the warmth and sense of belonging that comes with being truly loved.
"Energy & Light" was Inspired by Bernini's ability to communicate energy and passion through sculpture. My choice of a brushed finish on this stunning bronze sculpture communicates a powerful energy through refracted light, and by the contrast between highly polished negative space and dark shadows in the incandescent live edge.
Memories of Sedona is a powerful and evocative sculpture that appeals to the sleeping power of mountains as old as the earth itself. This sculpture was inspired by an indelible memory of stunningly beautiful cliffs that all that but overwhelmed my senses as our helicopter swooped across their ancient faces.
“Maui on Fire” is my memorial remembrance of people and all that they lost in the 2023 wildfires. Images of beautiful and historic Lahaina look like a war zone. Nothing was spared from nature’s most destructive, dangerous, and indiscriminate force.
The ghostly hand is for the people who lost their lives. Four wells are not enough to draw water from the aquifer beneath the burning earth. The red building is losing its battle for survival as the red pitchfork, the wildfire, is driven mad by hurricane force winds. Serene blue is the ocean that surrounds this tropical paradise. Maui on Fire is a reminder of just how fragile and powerless we are before an enraged Mother Nature. We must protect our earth to protect humankind.
