Mixed media collage on prepared stretched canvas. Image details and backgrounds painted in acrylic
I start out utilizing original and vintage surface pattern designs printed on assorted papers and randomly cover a prepared stretched canvas. The figures are created by negative painting the background in acrylic revealing a gathering seated around a table, engaged in conversation. They are a representation of friendship, family and the human condition. I began experimenting with this technique in 2024 and liken it to an archeological dig, exposing a variation of figures without any real plan. This piece garnered a 3rd place cash award in a juried NY gallery exhibit in March 2025.
Utilizing original and vintage surface pattern designs from my 40 year career as a textile designer, I created this mixed media portrait of my soulmate of 52 years during one of our travel adventures. Jeffrey is seated with our luggage in Florence awaiting a boat to take us to Venice. The background and his features are painted in acrylics. He's pensive, tired and hungry from our journey and I photographed him in this dour mood. I finally decided to create this collage of him some 40 years later.
I start out utilizing original and vintage surface pattern designs printed on assorted papers and randomly cover a prepared stretched canvas. The figures are created by negative painting the background in acrylic revealing four seated travelers as they wait for a bus. It was my first experiment with this technique and likened it to an archeological dig, exposing the seated figures without any real plan. This piece won a 2nd place cash award in a juried NY gallery exhibit in March 2024.
With this piece, I chose to sketch the imagery and fill it in with patterns. I took a photo of four year old Rowan as he sipped his tea (because Harry Potter drinks tea) The background pattern is painted in acrylics as are Rowan's features. I also utilized a lace pattern as a stamp to create the lace effect on the placemat. This was purely a labor of love reflecting the sweet innocence of a child
As I walk my dog each day, I see the same three gentlemen who regularly sit on the bench together talking and smoking cigars and took a photo of them. I again decided to sketch them and began to collage their clothing with patterns printed on assorted papers. Their features are painted in acrylic and cigars are collaged using magazine cut outs. The afternoon sun cast a shadow from building behind them which I felt added to the quiet serenity of the scene.
This piece was created from a photo I took in San Marco Square in Venice, Italy. The shoemaker is oblivious to the people walking by and intently focused on the work he's creating. I used random printed textile patterns, to create the shoes, his garments and the surroundings within his booth, and used acrylic paint for his features and the solid background color, all on stretched canvas.
