Tending My Grandmother's Garden by Emily Hanako Momohara “Tending My Grandmother's Garden by Emily Hanako Momohara”

My Grandmother was born in the USA to Japanese immigrant parents. Her life contained a combination and collaboration of traditions from both cultures. Growing up, her home was my playground frequently and I emulated her constantly. In a way, her example shaped my view the world and art-making. Today, my work visually investigates our multi-cultural life.

In "Tending My Grandmother's Garden", I drew on bonsai, a Japanese gardening art-form, which my Grandmother practiced. This series of work symbolically manipulates, cares for and protects the bonsai through Japanese and American techniques. The still lives are representative the preciousness I hold for my mixed culture.

As different races intermingle, cultural boundaries are blurred and the hybrids from biracial marriages is now common in the 21st century.
Some years back the term 'hybrid' was not merely an insult but also a crime. But today hybridness of being has artfully culminated to superhuman abilities thus increasing mastery over nature. Besides, it is the blurring of ones distinct cultures, races and beliefs to create reality much bigger.
As a result of race-intermingle, a new generation of multi-ethnic millennials is well represented in different sectors such as politics, entertainment, sports and business. Come to think of people like Barack Obama , Halle Berry , Tiger Woods and Steven Jobs .
Natgeo 's magazine once commissioned a project about mixed races which had a quite positive results considering beautiful hybrids. Some of the word's most beautiful women are multiracial; Beyonce is a stunning blend of African American, Irish and Creole, supermodel Naomi Campbell is part Jamaican and part Chinese.
Today we have friends and relatives who are the results of race-intermingle. World citizenship begins with an acceptance of the oneness of the human family and the interconnectedness of the nations of the Earth, our home.
