SÜ's (suzanne Fortin), inspiration comes mostly from experiences she has had around the world, Africa being her “second home”. In creating her dimensional art, she explains that she feels like an instrument by which pictures and words are played out on the canvas; as if, like an orchestra, each color, paper, wire, and material used is becoming a three dimensional symphony.
A lot of the materials used in her art come from recycled items found scattered in her environment, in nature or along the roadside. Most of the subjects SÜ depicts translate her preoccupations about social worldwide problems such as poverty and sickness, slavery or lack of water; and also of the people she has met during her expeditions around the world, namely in Africa where she lived for 10 years.
In addition to SÜ’s deeply emotional expressions of world suffering, she also reveals her lighter side through humorous works of animals and humans.
SÜ lives near Montreal, Quebec, Canada but travels often to nourish her creativity and inspiration. She also takes courses abroad to expand her technical knowledge of mixed media and dimensional art, for which she has become most well known.
ARTISTIC APPROACH AND TOOLS
SÜ's mixed media dimensional works are mounted on materials including paper, canvas, glass, and wood. Discarded items found here and there often become the focal point or may embellish some of her collages. SÜ’s organic compositions invoke associations with the elements of the earth and the human form.
Swirling tendrils of gold, craggy paper parchments and anthropomorphized articles create a dynamic sculptural relief or ‘topography’ against the artist’s characteristically gold, yellow and copper background. Fascinated with Africa and its contemporary diaspora culture, SÜ’s compositions often carry visual and sometimes textual references to the continent’s global socio-political position and the vibrant traditions of its diverse peoples.

SÜ adjusts the flatness of canvas in order to meet its three-dimensional quest while decontextualizing normative objects whether fortune cookies or pieces of old floppy disks. SÜ leaves to often recycled objects, a large part of expressiveness issue from their own condition.
Her almost sculptural installations raise space and sit on the center of the action in an accumulation of heterogeneous objects diverted from their usual function. Her overflowing creativity and the imposition of the heights or depths that she allows in canvases, astonishly surprise the visitor.
The uniqueness of the 3 Dimension on canvas let breathe in the themes, the subjects concerning life generally speaking showing a touch of humor and allows the work to follow its imaginary route out of the canvas. It goes beyond the framework and leaves visitors the opportunity to invent the end of the story!
