Astrid Bruning

Astrid Bruning

Location: Australia

“ The smallest feline is a masterpiece ” Leonardo Da Vinci

Astrid has been painting for over thirty years. Her obsession with detail and vitality is strikingly evident. Originally self taught in the style of super-realism, Astrid developed her skills with both a BA in Visual Arts (Charles Sturt) and then a diploma (Tafe, Albury), receiving the 'achievement of excellence' award. Here she experimented with a variety of contemporary visual languages, but in more recent years she has returned to her first love of realism.

Astrid is currently working on a series of cat paintings. These are not simple studies, but richly detailed and sensitively handled portraits of her subjects - their character and beauty captured and elevated on the canvas, and often embellished with flourishes of Art Nouveau decoration. Her love for the cat - its languor and playfulness is sharply present in her charming works. Ranging from oversized works to tiny miniatures and covering a wide spectrum of media, her body of work is an irresistible and soulful celebration of the feline.
