I have been making art for more than 60 years...and have just moved int a new studio where I plan to continue making my unique sculptures, paintings, and collages. I studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Mass, sculpture with Wolfgang Behl, and, when I found galleries would not accept work by women unless they had a financial patron- They told me women's art didn't sell - this was in the early 1960's- so I simply spent my time learning to make the kind of work I liked. In the 7o"s a group of artists- women- gathered together and we formed our own gallery, so successful it lasted for 40 years!
This group of small trapped figures are the result of a difficult time in my life...the death of my husband followed by the covid lock-down. I was alone for the first time in 58 years and grieving much more deeply than I realized- I had for two years stopped seeing art and anything beautiful! I will forever thank the unknown person who sent me a video...a music video that I began to watch - a song that I loved as a young woman, but felt it was too melancholy; This version, a B/W film showed the lead singer's head, and it was a beautiful sculpture - and his voice was angry...It was The Sound Of Silence by DISTURBED! I was so shocked and moved that I went to my studio, found some materials and began to create this group and am still adding to it!
This is the fourth of the Pandemic circus series. All the figures are trapped in brass rings...the way I was trapped in my home during Covid. And the way we are all trapped.
