Science Fictional City Landscape Design

Haimeng Cao works as a professional visual development and concept artist of film and game industry in Los Angeles. He used to work for Blizzard Entertainment for their new games and Framestore for the upcoming film Dune directed by Denis Villeneuve. His expertise is to visualize the fantastic universe by character design and environmental design. ArtCenter College of Design illustration major as his educational background inspired him a lot and gave him very strong and professional skill to bring surprising work to the industry.

Science fictional city landscape design is the main theme of this portfolio. The media of the work are digital painting, rendering and modeling. He was influenced by several dystopian novels, especially 1984 and Brave New World, and the artists such as Mobius and Katsuhiro Otomo. The theme of his work is mainly about future city landscape design, the atmosphere and mood of the works otherwise indicate the totalitarian and formalized future societies. Every piece of work has unique camera angle and displays spectacular panorama of the city. Each city has different architecture styles and atmospheres. The story is established within those techniques.

City Rig System “City Rig System”

Rig system is the theme of the work; architectures and vehicles surround this central structure to work. Details on the platform emphasize the scale in the perspective.

Core “Core”

Architectures and ships are the elements to lead viewers’ eyes to the core of the city. Monochromatic mood strongly depicts a dystopian themed city landscape.

Emergency “Emergency”

The city is in its emergency status. The wing-shaped structures are opened and ablaze in red. The concept inspiration comes from insects.

Exit “Exit”

The work is aim for exploring monochromatic color style and highly simplified shapes and forms to create an epic emotion of a science fictional city landscape.

Industrial Area “Industrial Area”

Industrial elements are emphasized in this works. Repetitive drain outlets, factories, and oil tanks make a scale contrast with ships above and bring the audience into the atmosphere.

Tank and Heavy Cannon “Tank and Heavy Cannon”

The works shows a science fictional empire with powerful military power. The style is realistic and focuses on the detail of weapon designs.
