Rosie Burns Artist

Rosie is inspired by light and life, her work can be broadly split into two - the figure and the landscape, although
helichordial pattern within composition connects all of the work she produces -the spiraling form of the universe, DNA, shells, surf, clouds - toilet rolls ... can be found in most of her work. Representation of the human form is an ongoing preoccupation - gender, the association of gender roles, femininity, sirens, has generated a large body of work in different media -drawing, ink, watercolour, and print. www.rosieburnsartist.com

Muse and Marigold Men

I want to depict women as thinkers, strong, singular entities not mother or queen or sex object, able to indulge and be guilty of sloth or envy, and still maintain feminine beauty – sirens. The depiction of women in art has been a preoccupation through a degree in Archaeology: the goddess figures of fertility, the possibility of matriarchal societies in the Neolithic and the dominance of home maker, gatherer roles for women. Experiencing depictions of women in Degas delicate dancers and burlesque bathers, Rodin’s fallen in the gates of hell and sexualised drawings of women, Henry Moore’s gigantic queens and powerful mothers cradling infants reinforce the same depictions investigated in Archaeology.
Marigold Men (Marigolds are luridly coloured rubber gloves) are a series of prints, the male nude wearing rubber gloves, comic and concerned with the depiction of men in advertising using cleaning products along side the male names given to cleaning products / vacuum cleaners. Even though the realm of the domestic is still predominantly female - wouldn't we all like a Marigold man? This is a small attempt to redress the lack of domestic male figures depicted in art - not just king, leader, soldier or nobleman but man who also cleans the toilet! https://www.rosieburnsartist.com/gallery_257479.html#!

C-19 Response

C-19 Health over Wealth:- images form my response to the corona virus pandemic and the British government’s response to the global pandemic. It forms a visual representation of the effect of the virus on the population of England from March 2020.
A whole new vocabulary was adopted - lockdown, self-isolate, 2m rule – social distancing. This global crisis is by no means over, in July 2020, many people are still unable to return to work, cities, states and some countries are still under strict lockdown measures in an attempt to control the spread of the virus - and avoid peaks in cases that hospitals and health providers cannot deal with.
I hope this virus will be bought under control soon – the likelihood of a herd immunity is looking unlikely with as few as 5%, of people who have been exposed to the virus, developing effective long lasting antibodies. Human knowledge of how viruses operate, to develop an effecting antidote or vaccine, seems a long way off - from current medical understanding.
Ultimately, I believe, this is a environmental catastrophe fuelled crisis – cross contamination of virus from the animal kingdom coupled with an overwhelming global human population of almost 8 billion – something had to give. Human beings need to reassess their numbers: birth rates are massive and our physical resources are struggling to keep up.
By March 25th – it was almost impossible to buy a pack of toilet paper – people panicked and emptied supermarkets. Humour is essential in these peculiar times. Indivdual images are available within this gallery: https://www.rosieburnsartist.com/gallery_763999.html

Health over Welath “Health over Welath”

The first edition of 25 black ink original wood cut prints - A5 size paper, print dimensions 10x7cm. This print came about as a result of the social distancing measures put in place over the course of the lockdown. I think the measure was wise, however why is was ever called 'social' rather than 'physical' is completely beyond me - the added implicaitons of separation socially are damaging. The 2m - keep your distance rule however, put health over wealth - stopping transmission through close interaction over the need for business to be open for economic gain. The toilet roll is the backdrop for this series of prints - humour helps - as well as a poke at the crazy panic buying seen globally.

20.03.20 - Schools Closed “20.03.20 - Schools Closed”

On the 2oth March the British government closed all schools – until further notice – indefinitely. I was teaching in a secondary school in North Devon, on the 20th March, the last lesson I taught was a Yr 11 GCSE English lesson – their usual teacher was self isolating as a diabetic. I was their last experience of school. We looked at some war poetry on You Tube – unsure whether their GCSE exams were cancelled. It was more than odd, bleak, a time I will always remember – be slightly haunted by. One of the 16 yr old boys climbed out the window – a ground floor classroom in a quad – he had always wanted to, the class signed each others shirts with sharpie pens. Schools are due to reopen fully in September 2020 – if the numbers of corona virus stay low. Education moved from school – except for the children of key workers and the ‘vulnerable’ – to home, online learning and parcels sent home. The effect will be felt for a long time.
