Karen was born in Alberta, went to Art college and university there. She had four children who are in many of her paintings. Her passion for wildlife is also featured in many of her works. She moved to the U.K. in 1997, returning to Canada in 2019. She is now in Nanaimo with her three cats, and living close to one daughter, and one son.
