Nanette Newbry

Nanette Newbry was born in Pensacola, Florida and currently lives in Carlsbad, California. While growing up she travelled extensively with her family, going across the U.S. multiple times, living in Japan and Hawaii. In her twenties, she was a model and actor working on the East and West coasts. After graduating from the University of California San Diego in 1990 (magna cum laude), where she majored in visual arts with a minor in theatre arts, Nanette founded Studio 2055, an award-winning graphic design company.

In 2001, she returned to painting, opening Newbry Studios, a working artist and performance space. During that time, she participated in multiple solo and group exhibitions and created CrossFire and Sandboxed, performance art works relating to contemporary social and political themes. She’s been a visiting lecturer and critic at universities and art colleges.

Nanette was drawn to the encaustic painting of Jasper Johns and began learning the technique in 2005. She’s discovered that the medium’s characteristics allow her to deepen the meaning and metaphors in her work.

The artist welcomes commissions and may be reached at 760.729.8205.
