Best described as a man who lives to paint, and paints to live, that's the self taught artist Ron Waldeck. He paints a wide range of subject matter, but has always been passionate about birds and wildlife. His web sites www.ronwaldeck.com and www.artpromotions.co.za display his work.

Ron Waldeck, was born in 1946, in the then Rhodesia. He is a self taught artist and started his career engraving artworks on brass sheet. He then switched to watercolour and gouache and his main concentration was on birds and wildlife, which he executed in great detail.
He has now progressed to producing a wide range of subject matter which includes realistic impressionism and palette knife in an impasto style. Close up work remains a favorite regardless of the subject matter. Bushman portraits to flowers, nudes to children playing on the beach, all bear the typical style of his close up preference. Obviously he has exhibited in many South African galleries and has also owned and run galleries in a number of towns and cities.
The cheetah achieves by far the fastest land speed of any living animal, between 112 and 120 km/h (70 and 75 mph) While running at full speed, direction change is achieved by using the long tail as a counterbalance.

“Panic. Lion Stalking Zebras ”
When hunting zebra, lions need all the help they can get, because zebra are very alert animals and move around in groups, this means many pairs of eyes are constantly on the lookout for any signs of danger. In this painting, a male lion was waiting in the bushes, hoping that the zebra would come closer to his ambush spot.

Lions have managed to kill a buffalo, never an easy task, because buffalo are big strong and very dangerous animals. The buffalo herd have returned to the scene of what must have been an epic battle and gathered together a short distance away. They are no longer concerned for their safety because the lions have made their kill and the buffalo know from experience, that they will be exhausted and pose no further threat.

We are fortunate to live in an area that has some wonderfully well preserved buildings. I enjoy visiting them and painting them.
Vergelegen, meaning "situated far away", was granted to the Governor of the Cape in 1700 and the property has had a long a fascinating history since that time. William Adriaan Van Der Stel, was a man of divergent interests who transformed the uncultivated land into variable paradise. He planted vines, camphor trees and oaks, laid out fruit orchards and orange groves, and introduced cattle and sheep.

Main house. I came across this property while driving through the Sir Lowry's Village. It was abandoned but protected by gates and electric fence. A local stopped and spoke to me while I was painting, he told me what I was painting was once used as a coach house. According to him, this was the last stop for wagons, about to embark on the very tough journey up Sir Lowry's Pass. True or not I am uncertain, I do know that many wagons did pass this way, the ruts they left are still to be seen and they were declared a national monument in 1958

Sadly it no longer exists; a number of wonderful buildings were destroyed in central Johannesburg around 1984. If I remember correctly, the reason given for the destruction was PROGRESS. Makes you wonder? Built in the early 1900 it is hard to believe that anyone could want to destroy it

Poplar trees are apparently very fast growing; they are used for many interesting things when reduced to timber. The Mona Lisa was painted on a ply panel made of poplar wood. They are also used in the production of match sticks and last but not least, a certain variety of mushroom will only grow on old poplar timber. Now after all that, I must be honest and tell you, the only reason I painted them is because I like the shape and their autumn colours. Shame hey!!

For this particular series, I have decided to do all the paintings the same size 400x535mm.
I am working on 3mm supawood boards. There are a number of reasons for this, firstly the board size suits my painting style, secondly boards are strong and smooth, which allows for detail which I find important. Lastly, I have ready made cartons for this size, which makes packaging easy.
I use Acrylic paint, its great for what I do and very durable.
If an Owl sits on your roof and hoots, the story goes that people in the house are going to die. It has proved to be quiet true, people in houses that Owl's sat on did die, it might have been 50 years later, but so what, they died. Beautiful birds, how the colours blend, and the eye's are little short of spectacular. I am always amazed at the silent flight which I suppose adds to the myth above.

Beautiful colors, occur in flocks. The look like fighter aircraft when in flight. Nests in holes they excavate into sand banks. Diet consist mainly of bees but they will take other flying insects.

Bateleur is French for tumbler or tight rope walker. The bird gets its name from the strange way it flies.
If you are going to fly, wings and a tail (one would think are essential). The Bateleur has great wings, but an almost complete absence of a tail. Little wonder that it appears to loose balance in flight, as a birds tails are the steering mechanism. Why it has no tail, I have no idea, thank goodness I only paint them and had no part in the design.

A tall bird, long legged, grey and black with rather strange loose back feathers projecting behind the head. Adults have orange faces and immature yellow face. Has a reputation for killing and eating snakes but will obviously take and eat other insects like grasshoppers and locusts. Please don't give them any dictation or typing to do because I can assure you they are no good at it.

True Eagles have fully feathered legs, now as you can see, the Bateleur certainly does not. This statement I am sure has caused a lot of debate and argument with the people that know, and I am sure it will rage on for a long time to come. This bishop has very little to do with choir boys and candles. He is in fact dressed in his very best trying to attract the lady bishop birds. He need to hurry because as soon as the breeding season is over, he changes back into a rather plain brown little bird, a bit like the Cinderella story. By the look of him he may have had a few beers too many, in the off season. If he keeps this up, he will miss out and end up in rehab. And when he is not doing all of the above he is also a weaver.

I am a big heron fan, so I just love this bird. They tend to be a bit shy, but in some areas will allow quite close inspection. A little smaller than the Grey Heron but just as impressive. In flight black and white underwings are visable with the typical heron shape. In this painting I've included reeds and water. The water is clear, which I hope gives a fresh feel to the painting. Clear water is also an indication that there is a good balance in nature.

The largest of the region's Kingfishers and a fish eating bird. The male wears the red apron and the female the red trousers. Both have the great spike type hair styles, so they fit in perfectly with todays male youth (Human I think) This style suites the kingfishers far better than the humans. Hair sticking straight up always reminds me of someone who has just had a terrific electrical shock and I'm always tempted to laugh at the rather comical sight.

This species, like other bee-eaters, is richly coloured, it is also the smallest of the bee-eaters. Identified by small size, yellow throat, orange-buff underparts and squarish tail. Found in thornveld and woodland usually perched on a low branch waiting for insects.

Slightly smaller than the Brownhooded Kingfisher, but similar looking. The best way tell the two apart is by the bill, the Striped has the two - colored bill and Brownhooded the plain red. Found in woodland away from water, they eat insects.

This species occurs over a large range. It is widespread in Europe, Asia and Africa. In South Africa they are often seen perched on roadside telegraph poles. When hunting they fly 5- 20 m above ground, frequently turning into the wind and hovering, before swooping down to catch rats or mice. Blacksholdered Kites are the only other small raptor that regularly hover in this fashion, its wonderful to watch them in action, they have fantastic control and make it look easy. Who needs a noisy air show?

If you like Egrets, there is a good range to choose from. This one is between the Little and the Great White, which makes it a reasonably large bird at 68 cm. Different size birds operate in water depth best suited to the length of their legs, nature has some great plans.

Of all young birds, ducklings are by far the cutest. Not the best at walking on land, but still cute, however when they get into water they are at their best. They must also be clever, all of them learn to swim on their first lesson. Compare this to humans, I have heard of 22 year old blonds still drowning in the Mexican Wave.

Sunbirds are great little birds, not only for their colors but they have a busy, lively attitude and become very tame. In Nelspruit, near Kruger National Park, Gurney's Sugarbird were the culprits. In the Cape it's the Cape Sugar Bird that is guilty. They chase the sunbirds and I don't like that. All sugarbirds should be sent for road rage classes, to see if we can not improve their manners. The Cape Sugarbird must do a good job pollinating Protea's, just look how impressive this King Protea is.

Why this bird was named Purple Heron, I am not at all sure. The Heron part is obvious, but purple? Seems a bit much . Never mind, it's a beautiful bird and I am a big heron fan. This one looks like a mini version of the Goliath Heron, who's name does make sense, largest of the herons at 1,5 meters.
In this painting I am including reeds and water, it makes the bird stand out more and I enjoy those elements anyway.

Always found near water and a fish-eater, this beautiful bird is identified by it's black bill, entirely blue upperparts and cinnamon-coloured lower breast and belly. In flight, the colours of this bird are absolutely fantastic, what a pity you only get a quick look, because they are gone in a flash of dazzling blue.

These birds are reasonably large at 47 cm. They are not all that easy to see when feeding in a tree, because they blend in very well and move from branch to branch, hopping rather quickly. They appear to be in a terrible rush, till they decide to fly, then exactly the opposite is true. Following a noisy wing flapping to gain altitude, they then glide for a considerable distance before landing in the next tree. In flight one is able to appreciate the beautiful colours, especially the striking crimson primary feathers, as they glide with wings wide open.

Siamese cats must be very popular because breeders seem to have created many variations of this cat. One hears of seal, blue, chocolate and lilac, long and short hair. I owned a Siamese cat it had a beige off-white coat with blue eyes a dark chocolate face and ears. I thought this cat was very good looking and when I saw the other variations I knew that my Siamese was the best. Now please don't phone or write - mine was the best and that is that.

The first time I saw a Persian I got quite a fright. High speed and a collision with a very solid object like a brick wall came to mind, but you soon forget the flat face when you observe the incredible beauty of this animal.
I saw them at a cat show and they were groomed to perfection. I thought that it would be great to own one, till my wife pointed out the amount of effort it would require to maintain the look.
