Anthony Porter

y photographic practice explores the relationship between personal experience and wider social environments, using the camera as a tool to observe, question, and reflect on everyday moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. I am particularly interested in how photography can translate feelings such as familiarity, distance, and vulnerability into visual form.

My work has focused on themes of identity, place, and memory. I am drawn to quiet, often overlooked spaces and moments, using them as a way to suggest narratives rather than present fixed meanings. I aim to create images that encourage the viewer to pause and engage, allowing space for interpretation and emotional response.

My process is largely intuitive. I work both digitally and experimentally, often responding to light, texture, and atmosphere rather than pre-planned compositions. Editing plays an important role in my practice, where decisions around colour, contrast, and sequencing help shape the tone and intention of each project. I see the act of photographing as an ongoing dialogue between myself and the subject, where chance and control coexist.

Research and contextual studies have informed my practice significantly. Engaging with contemporary and historical photography has helped me to understand how visual language can communicate complex ideas and how artists use the medium to explore personal and political concerns. This has encouraged me to reflect critically on my own work and refine my visual approach.

As I aim to continue developing a practice that is reflective and conceptually driven, using photography to explore lived experience and the subtle details that define how we relate to the world around us.
