Wildlife in Costa Rica and Panama is vibrant and beautiful. If you're lucky, you get to experience this beauty. I have been lucky enough to paint some of it.
We found this juvenile lionfish while snorkeling off the coast of Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. These beautiful but venomous fish are invasive here, having been accidentally introduced. Fortunately, the local folks are finding ways to deal with them.
Sometimes you find a creature that is so beautiful that it almost seems unreal. That's how it was when we were hiking the jungle behind our house in Puerto Viejo. The shine on this little grasshopper was absolutely incredible!
Costa Rica is home to at least 1500 species of orchids. Do I need to say more?
“Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow”
These are the flowers of "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" (Brunfelsia pauciflora) and there are two unique facts about this lovely shrub. The flowers start out dark purple and fade to lavender and eventually turn white. The second fact is that B. pauciflora is a key ingredient in ayahuasca, a traditional hallucinogenic drink used by many indigenous cultures.
I am currently owned by 9 cats, two dogs, and a bunny. These babies are my family and I love illustrating pets. Currently, I'm working with graphite pencils but plan to start using watercolors and other media soon. I would love to illustrate some of your pets as well!
At 14, this little lady definitely rules the roost around here.
