My story is simple as is my art. I always wanted to learn to draw and paint. It wasn’t until both my parents died within a month of each other, that I had the courage to go forth and enroll in some classes. Fortunately, I had two years of instruction before COVID cast its spell on the world and among so many other things my art classes closed.  At this point, I took the opportunity to learn, draw, practice as I spent much time on YouTube watching some incredible artists pick up where my weekly instruction left off. It was a really comforting and relaxing diversion.  By day I was teaching from my son’s bedroom for what would be almost a year until it was at least in part safe to return to school.

After teaching for 27 years, I retired in June 2021, just months after returning to school. My husband and I then relocated from Maryland to Florida, where our three children had already settled.  It was exciting, and a bit scary, but we were near them and that was always the plan. By the time we arrived there were also 2 grandchildren in the picture.

But in January of 2022, my life and that of my family’s was devastated and shattered. My daughter, Abby, a Deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office,  in Florida was murdered by a another deputy in the same department while on vacation with two other couples, 3 of them also deputies in the same department. There are no words to describe the loss and the hole left in our lives. We also learned that this  murder was predictable. This murderer had stalked and sexually assaulted another woman 6 years earlier and the Sheriff’s office knew and did nothing. So maybe my story is not so simple.

 I continue to miss Abby every minute of every day. She was my biggest cheerleader in so many ways. She would have encouraged, cheered, and supported this moment.  She would embrace the significance and opportunity of doing what I love.  In other words, she would have been with me every step of the way. I know she is with me in spirit and that gives me comfort and joy.

My art reflects so much about our connection and the importance of family. It is the quiet moments, the beach, the views, the water, the pets in our lives and the things that create joy and happiness.
