Brian Smith

My career began with 25 years as a Freelance Illustrator working in the London Advertising world allowing me to develop a vast knowledge in a diverse range of skills in various mediums.
I moved to the Balearic Islands in 2006 where I lived for 4 years to continue to promote my fine art and tutored residential painting holidays both in Menorca and around the world. I returned to the UK in November 2010 and now live in Cumbria where I continue to paint the wonders of Lakeland life.
Watercolour became my chosen medium in the late 80’s and after some years of experimentation and struggle my work began to gain recognition being shown at The Mall, Bankside and Cork Street Open Exhibition’s from 2004, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 & 2015. I also had work accepted and sold at The Lakeland Artists Open Exhibition 2013 & 2014.
In 2011 I was awarded ‘The Artist’ prize at The Open Exhibition, Bankside Gallery and an article followed with a 6 page feature in the January 2012 issue of the magazine.
I also received The ‘Matt Bruce’ Award at the RI Open Exhibition at The Mall Gallery, London in 2011
Further recognition in 2011 was to be selected as a Candidate for Membership of the RI which is a personal goal of mine. Also in 2011 my painting ‘The Duet’ was shown at The Sunday Times exhibition. This painting was chosen to tour with a small selection from the exhibition. The painting was one of five produced in print form to promote the exhibition and then used for the Entry Form for the 2012 exhibition.
I have written articles for a number of the Instructional Art magazines in the UK. The prestigious International Artist magazine offered an 8 page feature of my work in the February/March 2011. In the latter part of 2012 I was a finalist in the Favourite Subject Category in this magazine.
2014 has work accepted at The Royal Society of British Artists Open Exhibition and 2 works accepted for The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour at The Mall Gallery in London. These 2 paintings were sold on Preview Day.
2015 is bringing in new openings with work accepted and sold at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour at The Mall Gallery in London. 1 painting accepted at The Open Art Competition at Patchings and 2 watercolours accepted at The Lakeland Artists Exhibition in Grasmere. Other projects are in the process stages and will update during the year.

In Order

I was inspired to paint this picture whilst attending a military event in London where the regiment's attire were being inspected before the event began.

On Command

I have painted a series of military pictures where I have focused on events with the finery of the smart red uniforms of the soldiers. This painting was inspired by the 'barking' commands of the officer in charge of the regiment
