Fin Rice emerges as one of the most distinctive and visionary artists of our time. Rooted in the tactile alchemy of traditional photography, I have labored in makeshift darkrooms—bathrooms, closets, and borrowed basements—hand-mixing developers to coax luminous black-and-white prints into existence. Having witnessed film’s poignant swan song and digital photography’s explosive emergence, my practice remains profoundly anchored in the physical interplay of light and material.
My current body of work consists of light-reactive, large-scale canvas paintings—each one a singular, unrepeatable creation engineered to captivate the viewer from every angle and under every light. Driven by the belief that every collector deserves a deeply personal encounter, I craft original works without digital shortcuts, each piece serving as a testament to a specific moment in time.
Collaboration is central to my process; I share creative joy with a circle of talented friends who enrich the journey. Since the arrival of my daughter Mab in 2003, I have stenciled “BAM” into every artwork—a quiet, enduring tribute to legacy, love, and the next generation.
My signature technique fuses my original photography with metallic paints and delicate applications of gold, silver, and bronze leaf, all sealed beneath multiple layers of high-gloss varnish on canvas. Printed in-house and mounted on custom wooden stretcher frames, each piece can be personalized in size to suit the collector’s space. The resulting surface shimmers and transforms with the light, revealing hidden textures, iridescent depths, and vibrant accents that reward repeated viewings.
I do not merely present images; I invite the viewer into a living dialogue of light, memory, and transformation. My work bridges the analog past with contemporary innovation, offering a fresh and profound experience in an increasingly digital world.
