MARI ZHAR
Filipino Contemporary Artist | Sculptor | Author | Women’s Advocate
Mari Zhar is a Filipino contemporary artist, sculptor, and author whose narrative-driven works challenge conventional representations of women in art. Known for her faceless female figures, unguarded feminine poses, and distinctive crumpled-art technique, she explores womanhood, identity, marriage, motherhood, and the realities of women's lives.
Among her most defining artistic practices is the deliberate act of physically crumpling a painting after completing it, transforming a finished artwork into a surface marked by permanent folds, creases, and distortions. The process becomes part of the artwork itself, giving physical form to the experiences, imperfections, and complexities of the women she portrays.
Drawing from her Filipino heritage and personal experiences, Mari Zhar creates paintings and sculptures in which body language, material, and composition tell stories beyond facial expression. As the founder of La Galeria de Maria and Shaped Women Org. PH, she extends her artistic practice into literature, cultural development, and women's advocacy, building a creative identity defined by originality, experimentation, and a distinctly personal perspective on womanhood.
