Danny Kneebone

Location: Australia

International Award-winning Australian artist and photographer, Danny Kneebone strives to produce meticulous photographic digital and mixed media artworks that are unique and challenge the perception of what is a painting. Danny’s art practice is heavily influenced by his professional career as a designer and photographer. Having worked as art director and photographic manager for the world’s top art auction houses in Australia, Christie’s and Sotheby’s for over 18 years and currently working at Deutscher and Hackett since Sotheby’s left Australian in 2019. Danny has always been surrounded by Australia’s most collected art works and decorative arts giving him a unique view of how he wanted to portray his own art style.

Influenced by provocative Australian artists and their story-telling abilities, ranging from Norman Lindsay with his luscious and physical forms, through to photo-based artist, Polexini Papapetrou, with her somewhat disturbing exploration of identities, Daniel uses his detailed artworks to make a statement about areas that are important to him.

Daniel’s ‘Femme Magnifique’ series is a celebration of femininity, which offers the viewer a glimpse into the sensuous world of burlesque and the artistry behind each of the acts, strongly influenced by each woman’s empowerment, attitude and spirit.

Daniel’s second series ALICE-ISM (2019-23) is an illustration of the age-old Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland tackled through the grandeur of theatrical performance with a burlesque twist.

The timeless fascination of Alice—which still resonates in today’s modern world— as evidenced by the numerous interpretations of Alice across many art forms, has convinced Daniel that ‘Alice-ism’ is a movement in itself.

The methodologies adopted for Daniel’s artworks undergo multiple processes, although it always begins with a photo shoot. By combining a strong sense of colour, light and composition, Daniel uses his digital artist skills to utilize colour pixels for painting and a camera to capture images that reflect various aspects of his subject matter, now working with both traditional paint materials Danny has developed his artist style and practice to a place that is both unique to his realistic style but also embrace the imagination story telling of his subject matter.
