Artist Raven

I grew up drawing and painting my “little masterpieces” for sale to my auntie’s trusted friend and classmate who welcomed my creativity and rewarded me handsomely for each one.  At the time I did not know that he, 'Roger Alleyne' was a cultural icon and sculptor within the Visual Arts Community in my home town; I was five. Now, looking back Alleyne was molding me, enticing me even, to become the creative individual I've become today!  By the time I was a teenager there wasn’t a piece of textile I didn’t leave my mark on, with my messages of truth and thrusts of romanticism as I delved deep into fashion design, pattern making, painting and textile composition.  But as time passed on my pursuits lead me into the somewhat sobering path of career objectives and lifestyle sustainability, innately sobering.

Born into a family of tailors, seamstresses and artists in The Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, these pearl isles that sit nestled in the North Atlantic Ocean it appears creative expression was my birthright. I am a Visual Artist and my studio lends to every arms of creative vulnerability and self-expression "I literally get lost in the magic of creating."

My passion has always lead me to stay connected somewhat in the way of artistry and so throughout my twenties I would later rediscover my creative attributes and pursue architectural design to become an interior designer a portfolio I shared with my business partner and spouse for many years.  Now I claim a different studio, As RAven of RAven ARt and Design Studio. I am an artist always and as an experienced muralist, the walls have been my canvas for many years with my mural exhibits gracing the residences of many satisfied clients. My past portfolio seldom allowed the time for exhibiting my paintings, sculptures and canvases but this is rectified with RAven ARt and Design Studio. In my earlier years fashion and textile design have graced my ingenious palate allowing me a wealth of creative accreditability and setting the foundation for my shift in these accredited years, identifying me with the canvas once more.

I am fueled by our vast array of island wildlife, the resounding silence, the many comforts that nature surrenders wittingly, the gleaming speckle of the stars by night and yes, by the genius talents left over by the master of the arts themselves. Jacob Isaacszoon van Swanenburg, the challenging renditions passed to us from Rembrandt's chapter, and who can resist the realism of Willem Witsen's scenic harbor portrayals that long stay adrift on our minds, to name but a fraction of these great contributes. To these and to so many other great talents, I accredit my love and reverence for visual expression.

My voice is my own and in painting and creating I am heard.

Trinidad - Home of the Humming Bird

The islands of Trinidad and Tobago sit uniquely along a key migration route for this magnificent species and are graced by both resident and visiting humming birds throughout their flight migration.

I identified our resident Copper-Rumped Humming bird as my subject for this painting, distinguishable by its green upper parts and coppery cinnamon rump it's brilliant plumage and iridescent beauty can only be captured in flight. To match it's brilliance I created a backdrop worthy of its' stupendous grandeur. Blending deep magenta, a light permanent green and a lemon yellow acrylic wash I created the ground for his magnificent species. I added black to outline the body, phthalo for the bright brilliant green body and bronze to emphasize the wings, a hint of cadmium red, touches of gold and bronze in the body and feet and a sprinkle of white to emphasize the eyes.

White, cadmium yellow and burnt sienna are the main colors within the light embossed foliage that nestles the Copper Rump.

Abyss

"All is not dark in the abyss, flickers of hope reside there; life emerges in the stillness and an era is born.” Against the matte black uneven canapy comes the silver and bronze pigments that illuminate the expanse of darkness. A glimmer of redemption witnessed by the onlooker.

Ten Deep Breaths, Patience

Who doesn't enjoy art depicting the innocence of children. A child in creative thought, is bound to no responsibility. Their young, creative minds see wonder everywhere and there is no end to their curiosity. Pure adoration, simplicity at play! We love what they are and despise what we have become by the burdens of this world. "Ah but to glimpse the magic they exhibit in deep thought once more is truly refreshing."

I chose acid free paper and acrylic for this expression as it is the most fitting of mediums, engaging the simplicity of all the surrounding elements within the painting and in direct relation to the subject.
