Artist Raven

I grew up drawing and painting my “little masterpieces” for sale to my auntie’s trusted friend and classmate who welcomed my creativity and rewarded me handsomely for each piece. At the time I did not know that he, 'Roger Alleyne' was a cultural icon and renowned sculptor within the Visual Arts Community in my hometown. I was five. Now; looking back he was molding me, enticing me even, to become the creative individual I am today!  By the time I was a teenager there wasn’t a piece of textile I didn’t leave my mark on, with my messages of truth and thrusts of romanticism filling every void.  But as time passed on my pursuits grew, this lead me into the world of business and corporate frivolity throughout my early twenties. As the concept of Art, in my family's background was not considered 'real work' so I was admonished very early to comply. I would later rediscover my creative attributes diving deep in my pursuit of designing concepts to become an architectural interior designer. These structural elements within buildings and walls have been my outlet for many years but now finally once again I can state, it is the canvas.

As an artist, an interior designer, and a curator of such to all things uniquely beautiful I find art in all forms and expressions, truly alive in people, in cultures, and customs. Novel to take that which is unseen and unknown and make seen, treasured, and appreciated at best. I want my paintings to leave an impression on the viewer as having glimpsed but a fracture of what I truly see while I'm creating. In that moment, I invite you to witness my story, I trust while in pursuit of your own.

I am RAven of RAven ARt & Design Studio; a national of the twin pearl isles of The Republic of Trinidad & Tobago that sit in the North Atlantic Ocean in reverent beauty just off the coast of Venezuela in the vibrant Caribbean Seas.  My major is Interior Design, but I share portfolios as the Lead Interior Designer, and Visual Design Coordinator at the studio with my business partner and husband. I am a Visual Artist and my canvas is my release.  My inspiration is fueled by our vast array of island wildlife, the silence, the many comforts of nature, the gleaming speckle of the stars by night and yes, by the genius talents left over by the master of the arts themselves, Jacob Isaacszoon van Swanenburg, the challenging renditions passed to us from Rembrandt's chapter, and who can resist the realism of Willem Witsen's scenic harbor portrayals that long stay adrift on our minds, to name but a few. To these greats and many other talents, I accredit my love and reverence for visual art.

My voice is my own and in painting, and creating I am heard.  – RAven

Portfolio:

Trinidad - Home of the Humming Bird

The islands of Trinidad and Tobago sit uniquely along a key migration route for this magnificent species and are graced by both resident and visiting humming birds throughout their flight migration.

I identified our resident Copper-Rumped Humming bird as my subject for this painting, distinguishable by its green upper parts and coppery cinnamon rump it's brilliant plumage and iridescent beauty can only be captured in flight. To match it's brilliance I created a backdrop worthy of its' stupendous grandeur. Blending deep magenta, a light permanent green and a lemon yellow acrylic wash I created the ground for his magnificent species. I added black to outline the body, phthalo for the bright brilliant green body and bronze to emphasize the wings, a hint of cadmium red, touches of gold and bronze in the body and feet and a sprinkle of white to emphasize the eyes.

White, cadmium yellow and burnt sienna are the main colors within the light embossed foliage that nestles the Copper Rump.
