Henry Aziengbe

Location: Nigeria

Henry Aziengbe is a contemporary Nigerian artist whose practice spans both painting and sculpture, unified by a deep commitment to storytelling, spirituality, and cultural identity. His art is defined by a figurative yet expressive style that blends realism with symbolism, inviting viewers into narratives that explore the human spirit, faith, tradition, and resilience.

Whether on canvas or in sculptural form, Henry’s works often engage with biblical stories, tribal culture, and universal human experiences. His paintings use vibrant acrylics to capture scenes of hope, struggle, and revelation, while his sculptures—crafted primarily from cement and metal—extend these same themes into powerful three-dimensional forms. This consistency across mediums makes his work not only visually compelling but also thematically profound.
Aziengbe’s art is rooted in lived experience and cultural memory. Born in Benin City, Edo State, he discovered his love for drawing and sculpting at a young age and went on to study Fine and Applied Arts at the College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin. His background as both an educator and practicing artist gives his work a unique balance of accessibility and depth.
At the core of Henry’s creative vision is the belief that art is a vessel of truth, hope, and continuity. His works serve as both a mirror of heritage and a voice for timeless values such as faith, dignity, and perseverance. By weaving together painting and sculpture in a shared visual language, he creates a body of work that transcends form, resonating with viewers across cultures and generations.

"From a young age, I found myself constantly drawing, molding, and creating. I never knew exactly why it made me so happy — I only knew that art felt like home. Through my early education, art was the one thing that always brought me peace and joy".

Henry Aziengbe Studio

At Henry Aziengbe Studio, art becomes a voice of faith, reflection, and human experience. Each painting is more than color and form — it’s a spiritual dialogue between the seen and the unseen. My works explore divine encounters, human resilience, and the emotional pulse of everyday life. Through symbolic realism and expressive storytelling, I translate life’s trials, hope, and redemption into visual poetry.

From biblical narratives to scenes of cultural and social depth, every brushstroke seeks to connect heart and spirit — to remind us that art can heal, inspire, and bring us closer to God and one another.

My studio is not just a space of creation; it is a sanctuary where emotions are redeemed through light, texture, and purpose — where each painting carries a message of faith, courage, and renewal.

The Awakening of Sight “The Awakening of Sight”

A man sits quietly, a walking stick in hand, as Jesus kneels before him, gently touching his eyes. In that sacred moment, light breaks through the darkness — a powerful symbol of spiritual awakening.

The Awakening of Sight was inspired by my personal journey of rediscovering faith. There was a time I couldn’t see the beauty of walking closely with God, blinded by life’s distractions and struggles. This painting reflects that transformation — from blindness to clarity, from doubt to peace.

Through the compassionate hand of Christ, vision is restored not only to the eyes but to the soul. It reminds us that true sight comes through faith, and that following Jesus’ teachings can illuminate the path even in the darkest times.

Return to Grace “Return to Grace”

With a bowed head and trembling steps, a weary man approaches an elder whose arms are open wide — a symbol of unconditional love and forgiveness. Return to Grace captures the powerful moment of reunion between a lost soul and divine mercy.

This painting mirrors my own journey through hardship — the years of wandering, loneliness, and silent battles that distanced me from God. In the midst of struggle, I discovered that true peace begins in surrender, in allowing grace to guide each step. Through prayer, solitude, and renewed faith, I found the strength to return.

The embrace awaiting the lost wanderer speaks of a love that never fades — a reminder that no matter how far we drift, God’s arms remain open, ready to restore and renew.

Songs from the Shepherd’s Heart “Songs from the Shepherd’s Heart”

This painting makes me feel closer to God. During moments when life felt heavy and I was weighed down by pain, I found peace in singing praises. Songs from the Shepherd’s Heart was born from that place of surrender and gratitude — a reminder that worship brings light to even the darkest seasons.

Inspired by young David playing his harp, this artwork captures the intimate connection between faith and peace. Through each brushstroke, I sought to express the serenity that comes from lifting one’s heart in song, even when words fail.

It is a painting of hope — one that reminds me and, I believe, anyone who sees it, that music and faith can heal the soul and draw us closer to divine presence.

The Good Shepherd “The Good Shepherd”

The Good Shepherd is an acrylic painting on canvas that beautifully captures the tender symbolism of divine care and redemption. The artwork portrays the shepherd holding a sheep that had wandered far from the flock, with the distant silhouettes of other sheep along the horizon — a powerful reminder of God’s unending love and mercy. This piece draws inspiration from the biblical passage where Jesus speaks of leaving the ninety-nine to find the one lost sheep, revealing the compassion and pursuit of the divine heart. Through gentle brushwork, soft light, and emotive tones, the artist conveys themes of forgiveness, guidance, and restoration.

The Duel for Blessing “The Duel for Blessing”

The Duel for Blessing is an evocative acrylic painting on canvas that portrays the intense biblical moment of Jacob wrestling with an angel. This symbolic encounter reflects the inner struggle of faith, perseverance, and divine favor. The artist captures the tension between human will and heavenly purpose, where pain and persistence merge into transformation. Through expressive strokes and subtle contrasts, the work reveals that blessings often emerge from struggle — a reminder that faith is tested before it triumphs.

Green Pastures “Green Pastures”

Green Pastures is a peaceful acrylic painting on canvas that illustrates the comforting image of a shepherd leading his flock toward still waters and lush fields — a vivid portrayal of Psalm 23: “He makes me lie down in green pastures.” This work reflects serenity, divine guidance, and the assurance of faith. The composition gently leads the viewer’s eye across the horizon, symbolizing the soul’s journey toward peace and spiritual fulfillment. Through delicate brushwork and harmonious tones, the artist captures the essence of divine provision and the beauty of following the Shepherd’s voice.
