Tommy Johnson has painted since graduating from Radford University in 1977. He seeks out unique compositions that evoke emotional resonance, creating work that feels both personal and shared. Painting remains a deeply cathartic practice for him, and forging a genuine connection with the viewer is central to his art.
My recent paintings span a wide range of subjects — from coastal landscapes and quiet rural scenes to bold florals, abstract studies, and atmospheric sky pieces. I focus on mood, color, and composition rather than strict realism, creating work that feels expressive, varied, and connected across different themes.
A solitary heron stands in glowing sunset waters, surrounded by soft mist and tall reeds. Warm oranges and golds reflect across the ripples, giving the scene a calm, atmospheric feel. The piece captures a quiet moment in nature with a strong sense of serenity and light.
A quiet winter path unfolds beneath a muted sky, where a soft glow breaks through the cold haze. Textured strokes and subtle light create an otherworldly calm, giving the scene a dreamlike, ethereal quality.
A lone sand dollar rests in gentle surf, surrounded by soft movement and glowing coastal light. Subtle purples and warm neutrals create a peaceful balance, giving the piece a quiet, meditative presence. The scene captures a moment of stillness at the edge of the shore.
A wooden pier leads into tranquil water, lit by the warm glow of lamps. The sky’s soft pastels and reflections give the scene a calm, reflective mood.
