Biography

Shana Patry is a visual artist from Saguenay (QC) Canada 

Supported by her family from a very young age, she took oil painting classes between the ages of 8 and 12. After choosing all the artistic options available in high school, she began her college studies in Visual Arts at Cégep de Jonquière in 2013. At the same time, she started selling her work online through social media, and took part in various small group shows and artisan markets. She graduated in January 2016 and has since devoted herself fully to her art.

Seeking new challenges, in 2019 she completed a professional specialization certificate in launching an artistic business, followed in 2020 by an intensive one-year online program at the Milan Art Institute. She is a soon to be graduate of the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Visual Arts at Université du Québec at Chicoutimi (UQAC). 

Since 2022, Shana has been teaching acrylic and oil painting at the Ateliers d’Arts Plastiques de Saguenay, driven by her desire to share her knowledge. Her work has been featured in several group exhibitions in Canada and in Morocco.

Artist statement

My hybrid practice in painting and digital arts combines traditional techniques with new technologies such as digital collage, databending, microcontrollers (Arduino), video mapping, screens, and sensors. I enjoy integrating visual distortions into my work, such as glitches, pixels, and elements drawn from the iconography of old computers. For me, it feels as though technology is engulfing nature, like a parasite.

My painting techniques, specialized in hyperrealistic animal representations, stand in contrast to the sterile nature of machines and technological devices. I seek to create immersive experiences and to renew the medium of painting by combining it with digital media.

I am interested in duality, antonyms, contrasts, and oppositions, as well as the ambivalence between certainty and uncertainty, the cycle of life and death, and the traces of our existence. Inspired by nature and biology, I explore ecological dynamics, highlighting the role of humans in a technological ecosystem where technology shapes interactions between organisms and their environment.
