Rosa (Rosita) Schandy grew up in Montevideo, Uruguay, enriching herself with the illustrations and drawings she saw in books and those her dad did. She is self made Collage Artist, inspired by a life of admiring art, color and form. Her collages are entirely manual; she playfully combines images in compositions that are as precarious and ridiculous as they are balanced and aesthetic.
Throughout her life, Rosita Schandy has explored techniques in a wide array of media. Her creativity took her to paint on canvas and leather, then to decoupage on canvas until she fell prey to the “passionate technique” of analog collage, as she describes it.
Life took Schandy to the sea working on cruise ships to make a living and at the end of her busy days, she would sometimes unwind and relax by cutting from magazines she bought in the ports and composing small collages in A4 and A3 size. She was immediately hooked.
After 2020 she stayed at home and intensely submerged into composing collages and collaborating with collage collectives around the world.
Without disrespecting the subject of the materials used, Schandy places them in a way that is both light and fun as well as powerful and thought provoking; her collages operate like a theatre where the artist sets the stage for the viewer to step in and become the author of their own story.
In May 2024, Schandy had her first solo exhibition “Imaginarium” which opened for a month at the Art Hall Sala de Arte Carlos F. Saez within the Ministry of Transport and Public Works in Montevideo. There she debuted with over 35 new pieces and a large-scale mural collage which earned her very positive reviews. The artwork showed Schandy’s penchant for mixing high and low culture with objects of beauty. In her pieces, such concepts as the feminine shape, ornaments, fantasy and surrealist intertwined with religious icons, flowers and comic characters in some sort of playful dance, with a touch of protest, sarcasm and balanced ridiculousness.
Her works have been shown in TAZART Art Gallery in Montevideo and are part of private collections in Argentina, England, Paraguay, Brazil, Switzerland, Peru, Norway and the United States.
In 2021 Schandy created the Uruguayan Collage Collective on Instagram (@uruguaycollagistas_collective) with the purpose of grouping Uruguayan collagists local and overseas and link them to other collectives around the world.
