Silent Overtures by Doug Caplan

This five-image black-and-white series was photographed at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain. The work examines how monumental architecture shapes human perception through scale, repetition, and controlled movement. Stripped of color, the images emphasize form, geometry, and the tension between openness and constraint embedded in the built environment. Figures, when present, are reduced to quiet markers of proportion rather than narrative subjects, reinforcing the dialogue between individual presence and institutional design. The series invites viewers to consider how contemporary architectural spaces both organize and distance us—simultaneously inviting participation while enforcing order, rhythm, and restraint.
