ARE YOU PLAYING PICKLEBALL?
posted by Michael VanPattenHave you started your pickleball journey yet? This new sport has been around since 1965, when it was invented on Bainbridge Island in Washington State. Some say the sport was named after the family dog named Pickles. Pickle Ball, Inc. was formed in 1968 to manufacture pickleball equipment. In 1984, the United States Amateur Pickleball Association was created. Pickleball was played in all 50 U.S. states in 1990. In 2022, pickleball became the official sport of Washington state, where it was invented. Pickleball was named as the fastest growing sport in America from 2021 to 2024. The Association of Pickleball Professionals and the Professional Pickleball Association are now the leading organizations supporting the sport. The pickleball court is smaller (20 by 44 feet) than a tennis court with a 36-inch net in the middle. There is a non-volley area near the net on both sides that is named “the kitchen”. The plastic ball is close to 3 inches in diameter with between 26 and 40 evenly spaced circular holes. The paddles are up to 17 inches long, but the combined width and length cannot exceed 24 inches. The paddle surface is smooth and made from non-compressible materials such as carbon fiber and polymer cores. The first player or team with 11 points wins but must win by 2 points or they keep playing until they win by 2 points.
