Tommy Fiendish

London based artist Thomas D Wright, AKA Tommy Fiendish, has made his mark in several creative fields as a musician, street artist, sign-writer, TV set designer, and tattoo artist. Wright draws upon these diverse experiences in his current
practice as a freelance painter. Graduating with first degree honours from LCC,
University of the Arts London, 2018, he now works from his studio in Hackney, east London .

Wright’s core process lies with acrylics and spray paint and enamel on linen. His work is often experimental, combining expressive marks and gestural abstract ideas with pockets of graphic detail. His modern baroque paintings reference vintage image and surreal metaphors to depict contemporary situations, often with darkly humorous overtones.

Working in series allows him to explore ideas, themes and techniques, and expand his field of allusions, capturing dystopian social commentary with a twist of macabre drollery.

Fear and Salvation #1

Fear and Salvation. The new series by Thomas D Wright aka Tommy Fiendish.
This modern baroque series examines the links between medical and religious imagery.
Although harrowing, these images bring a sense of salvation to many.
The operating theatre also hosts brutal scenes as surgeons and anaesthetists play real life gods. Angelic nurses and deacon doctors bring the salvation to this sterile stage.

Servata Est “Servata Est”

Servata Est, translating to 'Reserved' was first started in 2018 and later completed in 2020.
Although the character is on a cross this has no religious implications. It is expressionism using metaphoric and graphic image. All the drama of a modern baroque. Bold and true.

Painted in acrylic, spray can and enamel on linen.

Man With Birds II, VOLANTE “Man With Birds II, VOLANTE”

Man With Birds II, Volante. Daily struggle and self inflicted pressures assist a blinkered vision of what is real in this world. Though would we change it? Perhaps we are prepared and even excited to enslave ourselves as we are chasing a dream and it will all be worth it one day.

Man With Birds II, Volante is a simple idea. The city man breaking from his daily existence to enviously appreciate the freedom of nature.

3 Nurses “3 Nurses”

3 Nurses, fourth painting in the 'Better Than Life' series, a social commentary inspired by the observation of modern living. The addiction to digital devices creating a filtered reality.
3 Nurses takes a surreal and sinister view of how young the victims of the unreal reality are and how they're dealt with.

This project devolved accidentally after the first painting in early 2017. Painted in black and white acrylic on raw linen, this has since become a favourite and has continued into later works. The Apple used throughout the series represent technology and carries biblical connotations of sin.

Building the stretchers and stretching the linen is an important part of the creative process, to ensure quality of materials and to have created the work from scratch.
